Douglas A. Bakan, Ph.D.

Dr. Bakan is Vice President of Business Development at Alerion Biomedical, Inc. in San Diego. Alerion applies innovative proprietary technologies in molecular targeting to the development of multiple products in the following areas: 1) clinical diagnostic imaging agents, 2) pre-clinical imaging agents , 3) therapeutic agents.

Dr. Bakan has considerable experience with diagnostic imaging and contrast agent development in both industry and academia. He has taken new agents from the early research stage through the product development cycle and into the formal manufacturing and commercialization environments. Dr. Bakan has authored or co-authored more than 45 scientific papers and abstracts describing the evaluation of safety and efficacy profiles of diagnostic imaging agents and has presented work at major scientific meetings for more than 18 years. Dr. Bakan is also a co-inventor on six issued and numerous pending US and foreign patents. His previous work at Molecular Biosystems Inc. ranged from the preclinical evaluation of various contrast agents to managing product development efforts to active involvement in business development and corporate strategic planning activities. As director of pharmaceutical formulations and manufacturing at Corvas International Inc., Dr. Bakan was responsible for all product development activities for both biological and small-molecule compounds intended for therapeutic indications in cardiovascular disease and cancer. Dr. Bakan holds a bachelor of science degree in bioengineering and applied engineering sciences and a doctorate in biology. He earned both degrees at the University of California, San Diego.
